Despite not sporting the most significant of numbers firmware 2.2 has been much anticipated by iPhone owners for some time and now it's here...

Heavily leaked before release (nothing is secret anymore) the new update brings us improvements galore, so let's just spit them out:

  • Google Street View
  • Public transit and walking directions
  • Display address of dropped pins
  • Share location via email
  • Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
  • Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
  • Improved formatting of wide HTML email
  • Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
  • Improved stability and performance of Safari
  • Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
  • Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
  • Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings
Yep, it's quite the bump this time around and makes up for the rather dull firmware 2.1 which was essentially a tweaks and performance optimisation patch.

On the other hand, much as we've been crying out for walking directions, OTA podcasts and the like simple pleasures like MMS and copy and paste continue to be criminally overlooked by the Cupertino giant. Quite why is baffling as it serves only to infuriate converts and provide ongoing ammunition to critics.

As I recently examined mobile OS X verses Safari (many thanks for the huge amount of feedback - largely positive - everyone) it seems my praise and criticism of this remarkable platform remain intact.

Sadly, that wasn't quite what I'd hoped...

Update: Nope, we don't yet know when the iPod touch will be getting 2.2 goodness, but owners must've gotten used to being treated like second class citizens now, right...? (!)

Update 2: As pointed out by Barry in the comments, firmware 2.2 is out for iPod touch now but it's bizarrely lacking the Google Maps improvements. Why? There's no technical reason so it must be to allow Apple to charge owners at a later date. Apple, this is why those who hate you hate you...

Update 3: Quick FYI - had assumed you guys know that Street View hasn't arrived in the UK yet (though it will soon). Until then it'll only work with US based locations - apologies if this wasn't clear.

Update 4: Switch from miles to kilometres in Google Maps is an annoying change, though UK numbers are now formatted properly when dialled.

Gordon, that's not obviously the case. I upgraded my iPhone 3G to v2.1 without any adverse affect on its unlocked functionality. I just didn't check before going to v2.2.

@Orinj - fair enough, though it has been the case on every other single iPhone firmware update so I'd have to say you were a bit impetuous there ;)

@Gordon - Perhaps. I'm obviously losing my 'geek' awareness of these things to make the mistake. That said, I'm using a hardware unlocking solution (Turbo SIM) ... more

@Orinj - normally hardware unlocks only work for one particular firmware version, if you can get guarantees beyond that I'll be impressed. I had an unlock iPhone for some time... more
